The restored Triangle Park provides patrons a great variety of things to do to include lunch or causal drink at the Café, games of chess and backgammon, ping pong, special musical performances by a variety of local performers and ensembles, summer movies, theatrical productions, open-air classes, ice skating in the winter, Internet access and plenty of sunshine drifting through the fern-like leaves of the Locust trees.
The Lawn is an urban jewel set amidst the concrete and asphalt of a vibrant downtown. A verdant space, encapsulated by an iconic 360-foot wall of cascading water, flanked by more green space, broad walkways and seasonal plantings, The Lawn’s activities change with the seasons but always there is a place for those seeking a quiet corner to read or just enjoy Triangle Park’s refreshing ambience.
From Thanksgiving through January, The Lawn is transformed into a winter wonderland with a portable skating rink with available shoe skate rental. Skating in the shadow of a colorfully decorated Christmas tree, at the entrance to the park, with holiday music in the background, brings a unique experience for Lexingtonians of all ages. A refreshing cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate at The Triangle Park Café completes the skating experience. Please note: The Lawn may will be closed for a short period after the skating rink is removed.
Vibrant Daffodils, entwined with English Ivy, announce the arrival of spring at Triangle Park. The Lawn is open for visitors to enjoy the spring sunshine and planned activities from yoga to chess and backgammon, mime and puppet shows. A book corner, for adults and children, is planned. Bring a blanket or folding chairs and enjoy classic movies, both old and new, on The Lawn. Beneath the fragrant Honey Locust trees a wide spectrum of other summer events can be found such as concerts, artists’ showings, authors reading from their works, public forums and enjoy the summer menu at the Café. Book clubs, social and civic groups can schedule summer meetings on The Lawn, have lunch at the Café and explore historic downtown Lexington.
As the Honey Locust trees’ fragile yellow leaves gently float onto The Lawn’ green carpet, their color is enhanced with planters filled with chrysanthemums in various autumn hues. Summer gradually blend into the fall with continued musical, artistic other events. Then, it is time for The Lawn to turn into a Winter Wonderland.
The Fountain, a 360-foot wall of cascading water, began life as the signature feature of Triangle Park but, in the past thirty years, has become a symbol of downtown Lexington. Newly married couples often select The Fountain as the background for their nuptial photographs. International landscape architect Robert Zion called The Fountain one of the more spectacular water features in the nation.
